Sustainability opportunity in wake of Proposition 23

Below is a link to an older (Feb 25, 2010), "fun" article by BILL McKibben about climate change followed by the results of Proposition 23. Both directly relate to sustainability.  The Bill McKibben essay is a little edgy, humorous comparing the "attack on climate science" to the "O.J. moment" and leads me to think about the lack of dialog between the two camps - the believers (as if it were a religion) and the deniers (as if it were a religion too) of climate change. Unfortunately, this is the mind frame for some when it comes to something about sustainability. I have friends who are skeptics of climate change science (skepticism is a healthy thing) and we get along just fine.  In fact, some of them are advocates of my sustainability work to the point of giving me advice on how to engage others in adopting sustainable practices.  Like sustainability, science is a journey. A journey about understanding and also discovering solutions that enhance life.  We have a great amount of science to help us make the decisions that will benefit us all in a short period of time for the long term. It involves changing what and how we do what we do.  It's hard though...to change life style personally and professionally... or is it?

I have changed my life for the better by making more and more complex steps to reduce my total impacts personally and professionally.  It has evolved into decision making that seeks to enhance my contributions to the planet (in small ways and big ways with kids, family, community, globally) in positive ways within every activity I do daily. It's fun and I love it! I help others to do it too! And it has evolved into a process to look at, act to change and educate about sustainability.

With the introduction of Open Framework Sustainability, My company, Peraska, is acting to dig deep helping individuals and companies achieve understanding and lead a way to look at climate change solutions and the sustainability maze. We even address how a company can respond or should respond to Climate Change.

There are many entry points to sustainability. Addressing controversial compliance issues is one of them. Climate change is an issue of compliance for many industries. It involves clean air, clean water, human resources and communities. Each compliance issue encountered presents an opportunity to introduce sustainable practices that will mitigate future costs of compliance. In 2006, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed the "Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006". Beginning in 2012, AB 32 requires that greenhouse gas emission levels in California be cut to 1990 levels by 2020. On November 2nd 2010 Proposition 23, was set to suspend AB 32, but California voters have rejected Proposition 23.  Now a reaffirmed challenge for California to meet its green house gas emission goals by 2020. No matter what individual feelings are about AB 32, this challenge should be looked at as an opportunity to create value for businesses that will have a positive domino effect on community of life quality. That is something Californian's can take to the bank!

As you read Bill's essay and the New York Times article, think about what you do daily and what impacts you are making both positive and negative? Whether you agree or disagree, I would enjoy your comments.  I find that dialog is the most important place to start... and continue.
